Founded in 1989 and certified organic since 1994, Jean-Pierre Clavet's farm raises grain-fed chickens, cattle, pigs and laying hens.
He's one of a few valiant breeders in Québec that decided to do things differently, banning from his farm the use of antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides and fertilizers. Instead, Jean-Pierre keeps his animals healthy by giving them plent of space to exercise, and adequate fresh air and daylight.
All his animals are allowed to graze freely, and are fed only from organic produces and grains. If an animal becomes sick, Jean-Pierre seeks alternative veterinary treatments such as homeopathy.
``Years ago, I worked in the petroleum and chemical industry. For 20 years I sailed the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Great Lakes. This has opened my eyes to the harmful effects pollution has on our planet, and gave rise to my profound respect for all that concerns the environment.``
Who buys Jean-Pierre's chicken and other organic products ? Two thirds of his clients are families, representing about 600 homes. Upscale restaurants as well as grocery stores make up the other third.
